Representation

Media Representation:

Representation in the media are ways in which the media shows different ages, genders, races, religion and disabilities. Media has the power to shape and adjust peoples understandings or beliefs about certain aspects of life meaning representation is very important to use in media.

Important Terms Used in Representation:

Stereotypes:
This terms means a simplified representation of a certain grouping of people often these stereotypes are exaggerated and can occasionally be offensive. For example Lauren from the Catherine Tate show is a stereotype of teenage Essex girl.

Construction:
This is the way a media text is put together this includes editing choices,

Mediation:
This is the process the story board and narrative has to go through before it begins filming to ensure such things as representation is relevant and is often why scripts are re-written. 

Selection:
This refers to what has been selected to use in the media text and is most commonly used in news articles. It can be very important as certain facts selected could change the angle the reporter is going for.

Anchorage:
These are words that go along with pictures it can change the context and give certain images meaning. It is often used in taglines for adverts or on film/T.V posters.

Ideology:
This is in reference to the ideas or beliefs, media creators have as their beliefs are often reflected in their work. However this also means that some media creators like to explore ideas against their beliefs to help widen their knowledge and inform their audience.

Theorist:
Stuart Hall:
Representation are constructed in the media text and hope the audience understands this, Mise-En-Scene is the way the audience sees representation. Stereotyping tends to occur where there are inequalities of power for example inequalities of genders, sexuality, etc...

David Gauntlett:
This is the identity theory which states that representation can define someones identity, media products provides tools and resources that construct the audiences personality or views. The audience uses media to suit they're individual needs and representation allows them to create a sense of self which is why the theory is also referred to as the Pick and Mix theory.
